Finalists announced for Plymouth’s City Centre and Waterfront Awards.. we’ve made it!
Saturday, September 07, 2013 By SIAN DAVIES @SdaviesHerald
THE Herald is proud to announce the finalists for the City Centre and Waterfront Awards. Businesses from all over the city centre and the waterfront attracted public votes and beat off stiff competition to make it into the final list. More than 12,000 votes were cast by the Plymouth public, leading to 48 businesses making it into the final.
The list is made up of the best the city has to offer – from one-off independent shops to big-brand names. Independent traders such as Funky Poppy, Grosvenor Plymouth, Rockets and Rascals, Rocksalt and The Flower Cafe prove customer loyalty is strong in the city.
The list of finalists had been whittled down from 184 nominees through public votes. The winners will then be chosen by judges Blanche Sainsbury and Richard Davis, and all the shortlisted companies will be invited to a glitzy awards dinner on Thursday, October 3.
Mr Davis, chair of Plymouth City Centre Company said: “When the awards were launched I really hoped that they would help promote some of the many hidden gems of businesses we have in the city.
“The categories chosen gave the opportunity for both widely known and smaller, more specialist, businesses to be put forward.
“We’ve seen a huge range of businesses nominated and there are some truly fantastic businesses that have reached the final.
“A really important aspect of these awards was that the public had the chance to nominate worthy businesses and then vote on who they wanted to see shortlisted.
“And boy has that happened, with over 12,000 votes cast.
“Many businesses have really entered into the spirit of the awards and have been encouraging their customers to vote for them.”
He added: “I’m looking forward to the awards evening.
“All the finalists have done really well to get to that stage and I’m anticipating a real buzz in the room.
“The prizes being awarded by the Herald are really worthwhile and will help businesses promote themselves in the run-up to the important festive season.”
Votes closed for the competition on Wednesday, August 28, and the numbers have been counted and verified to provide the list of the finalists.
The competition was launched on Thursday, July 4, with businesses promoting the awards to drum up public nominations from their loyal customers.
Customers have been flocking to vote since Wednesday, August 14 to get their favourite businesses the recognition they deserve.
In the first 24 hours more than 1,000 votes were cast for a whole host of businesses, from hotels and restaurants to fashion retailers and events.
The competition has seen businesses getting involved to encourage people to vote, with posters, flyers and lots of activity on social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter.
Prizes will be handed out at the ceremony, which will be held at The Holiday Inn, and the winning business in each category will win an advertising package with The Herald worth £1,000.
Blanche Sainsbury, managing director of The Herald, said: “We’re thrilled to announce the list of finalists and each business is special to Plymouth in its own unique way.
“The fantastic public response we’ve had to the competition is very encouraging and shows people are keen to support local businesses and see them do well.”
