THE final shortlist of popular Plymouth businesses and events has been chosen for this year’s prestigious City & Waterfront Awards.

Judges spent hours sifting through votes and deliberating across the categories as to which companies would be invited to The Herald’s glamorous awards event next month when the winners will be revealed.

Votes flooded in from the people of Plymouth for the city’s favourite hotels, boutiques, jewellers and events, revealing the overwhelming pride people have in local businesses and services.

Attracting a staggering 35,500 votes and a whopping 787 nominations for retailers, hotels and venues across the city, the response highlights the quality of services in the city and people’s dedication to and pride in the businesses they use.

People chose from 17 categories including best customer service, best accommodation provider and best independent fashion retailer and nominated for their favourites online. Businesses got involved using posters and online activity to encourage their customers to vote for them.

Now the shortlist has been selected from the votes, the winners will be revealed at a glittering ceremony at Plymouth Pavilions on October 22.

The full list of businesses was shortlisted by the team of six judges: Mark Sainsbury, managing director of Devon and Cornwall Media, The Herald’s editor Paul Burton, vice-chair of City Centre Company Liz Lawson and Waterfront manager Sarah Gibson.

Liz Lawson, owner of city kitchenware retailer Lawsons and vice-chair of the City Centre Company, said: “The City and Waterfront Awards celebrates which businesses the public believes provide great products and high quality service in Plymouth.

“It is encouraging to see that the votes have grown again this year and that customers are passionate about the businesses they use regularly and enjoy.

“There is a lot to shout about in Plymouth – from fantastic events, to vibrant cafes and beautiful places to stay and it is wonderful we can celebrate this publicly and honour those people who work so hard to provide it.

“The voting went very smoothly this year for the panel as the hard work is really done by the public vote demonstrating which businesses they think deserve to win.”

This year’s City and Waterfront Awards sponsors are Citybus, Alpha Logic, Drake Circus, Brittany Ferries, Plymouth Pavilions and Wrigley.
